CCI Ammo Basics
Cascade Cartridge, Inc., (CCI) produces centerfire pistol ammunition, rim fire ammunition, and primers for reloaders and industrial power loads. In 2009 CCI, then owned by Alliant Techsystems, was awarded a contract to provide Speer Gold Dot 9mm ammunition to the French Gendarmerie, among other law enforcement agencies throughout France. CCI ammo comes in eight load categories: Target/Plunking (eight versions), Varmint (16), Small Game (10), Centerfire Pistol Shotshell (10), Pest Control (five), Competition (four), Low Noise/Training/Specialty (four), and Noise Blanks. CCI Ammo History
CCI Ammunition is based in Lewiston, Idaho, right across the border from Washington on the Snake River. And just south of where the river splits directions going east and west. CCI was established in 1951 by Richard “Dick” Speer and partner Arvid Nelson. Speer was a machinist for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle. He was drawn to the ammunition industry after seeing the success his brother had with component bullets. Speer had intended to capitalize on the dearth of support for proprietary rifle cartridges, such as the Weatherby and Newton, to gain traction with hobby reloaders. But during World War II, when stocks of cartridge brass had been depleted, he turned to component primers. From there, Speer turned the company’s attention to noncorrosive, non-mercuric sports cartridges. To handle the expanding demand for his products after the war, Speer bought a 17-acre chicken ranch in Lewiston, the same property where the company continues to operate today.
